Author: René Portocarrero

René Portocarrero (1912-1985), was born in Cerro, at Havana´s surroundings, Cuba. His early drawings were about an illustrative nature having enlarged figures that were violently contrasted around light-dark shades. In 1923, he exposed for the first time – a landscape- at Fine Arts Salon of the conservative Painters and Sculptors Association of Havana. He started to paint using an amazing combination of strong contours and rich vigorous colors. The use of colors fragmentation iniciated also an important stage in his paintings giving them a fantastic character. His works possess a Baroque style; lines, shades and other stilystic conceptions are used to express his passioned obsession for the colonial matters. Hispanic-Cuban inner spaces, cathedrals and old women, they are all powerfully captured by Portocarrero´s paintbrush. His paintings about angels, situated at the Modern Art Museum of New York, shows an artist mystic interpretation. In his paintings the celestial matters are treated in a spicy and satiric expression.Portocarrero places, with his self-taught experience, the telluric truth of the Havana he lived, involving it in his sensual game. This city, the elements of its traditional culture, its neighborhoods, its architectural structure; all is entwined through his work to show us a defined Baroque breath of his environment.
